This past weekend the University of Southern California Men’s Crew raced in the 2010 Newport Autumn Rowing Festival (NARF) in Newport Beach, CA. NARF is one of the West Coast’s largest fall regattas, attracting dozens of California’s fastest crews including Cal, Stanford, Orange Coast College, UC Davis, and UC San Diego. The weather was beautiful and the water was perfect for racing. The Trojan Navy entered four boats into three different categories of races. The Varsity Eight (cox: Lisa Kolstad, stroke: Trent Oliver, Harrison Taylor, Kellen Proctor, Steven Kent, Chris Fisher, Noel Warner, Austin DeLana, bow: Dan Slutsky) raced in the Men’s Open 8 competition finishing with a quick time of 14:40.97. With new varsity additions Dan Slutsky, and Noel Warner, the varsity boat looks to build on a good start to the season.
The Novice Eight (cox: Jenny Ho, stroke: Alec Wiggin, Robbie Mills, A.C. Chen, Blake Wills, Dan Morison, Stephen Shanahan, Chris Johnson, bow: Ajay Chabra) entered into a very fast and competitive Men’s Frosh/Novice 8 competition. With 7 of 8 rowers completely new to the sport, the boat had a successful first race completing the 4,500-meter course in 17:13.55. “They looked sharp as soon as we began warming up, and rowed well for the entire race. It was the best performance I have seen from them yet,” remarked novice coxswain Jenny Ho.
Southern Cal also entered two four-man boats into the Men’s Open 4 with Coxswain Finals. The USC B boat, consisting of seniors Trent Oliver, Harrison Taylor, Kellen Proctor, and Steven Kent, and junior coxswain Jenna Fredersickson finished 8th with an impressive time of 17.04.99. USC A, filled by juniors Jon Sun, Melvin Ardijanto, Zak Kobos, senior Daniel De La Torre, and junior coxswain Salina Grilli also had a great race but finished well back in the group.
The weekend down in Newport Beach is an indicator of early season speed and the Men’s Crew will look to improve upon it in the 2010-2011 season. USC will continue its 2010 Fall racing season at the Head of the Harbor in the Port of Los Angeles on 11/20/10, beginning at 9am. We look forward to seeing you there!
