This past Saturday your USC Trojan Navy took on six very quick local colleges at the Head of the Harbor in the Port of Los Angeles. The weather was wild and the crews were challenged by rain and wind as they raced a 4,500m sprint.
Orange Coast College, Ucla, UC Irvine, Cal State Long Beach, UC Santa Barbara all participated in the varsity and novice races, with a few schools bring A and B crews for both levels. A few of these crews and Loyola Marymount University also boated coxed-fours for the varsity and novice categories.
The Trojan Navy boated a Varsity 8 (cox: Lisa Kolstad, stroke: Austin DeLana, Noel Warner, Trent Oliver, Dan Slutsky, Chris Fisher, Steven Kent, Jon Sun, bow: Harrison Taylor), a Novice 8 (cox: Abbie Gregg, stroke: Alec Wiggin, Robbie Mills, A.C. Chen, Blake Wills, Dan Morison, Stephen Shanahan, Chris Johnson, bow: Ajay Chabra), and a J.V. coxed 4 (cox: Salina Grilli, Stroke: Michael Lin-Brande, Daniel De La Torre, Melvin Ardijanto, bow: Zak Kobos).
All boats raced very competitively. The highlight of the day was the Novice 8 taking third place amongst a very quick head race. They lost only to the two Orange Coast Novice boats. The Varsity 8 had a difficult race, but still managed to walk through Long Beach, Irvine, and Santa Barbara. Full results can be found at row2k.com. They will look to continue building towards Pac-10s and the American Collegiate Rowing National Championship in Athens, Georgia this May.
